Ahead of Stockton and Darlington Railway’s 200-year anniversary later this year, Bishop Aukland’s Durham Dales Gateway has opened to the public, providing enhanced access to the historic 18-mile Weardale Railway line and its action-packed 2025 events programme.
Made possible with funding from the Stronger Towns Fund and Weardale Railway owners, The Auckland Project, Durham Dales Gateway has transformed a derelict annex, next to Bishop Auckland Railway Station, into brand-new visitor parking facilities, which include 91 car parking spaces, six electric vehicle charging points, five new cycle racks and plans for a brand-new ticketing system. The state-of-the-art facility will help accommodate railway passengers during this pivotal year.
Durham Dales Gateway is a £1.1m project, with £900k awarded by the Stronger Towns Fund and is one of a series of projects within Bishop Auckland which form part of the £53 million Levelling Up funding awarded to the town by HM Government.
