Bishop Auckland Bus Station and Surface Level Car Park

Future High Street Fund

In 2020, we successfully bid for £11.8 million of funding from the Future High Street Fund (FHSF) to improve Bishop Auckland’s transport and parking facilities. The funding is for regeneration projects to help increase the number of people visiting the town. Any new facilities will also significantly benefit the local communities and businesses for years to come.

Temporary bus stops are in place around the town to make sure you can catch the bus whilst works take place.

Update on project – July 25

Work continues at the bus station, with scaffolding to the building now removed.

External walls to the building are complete and the glazing to the passenger concourse is well advanced. The sedum roof has been installed and works will now move to the interior of the building, where Mechanical and Electrical installations will progress.

About the new Bus station

The new Bus station will provide the opportunity to create a modern, fit for purpose bus station within the town centre, which will help support businesses by attracting visitors to Bishop Auckland, address shortages in car parking and also increase footfall into the town centre once complete.

The new bus station will provide improved transport infrastructure to support managing visitor growth plus improve the urban fabric of the town and create a positive impression for users.

The Bus Station will consist of 8 new drive in, reverse out (DIRO) stands with 2 layover bays. There will be more toilets, including an accessible toilet, changing places unit, a parent and child facility as well as male and female toilets.

The new Bus Station will have CCTV, improved passenger information compared to that of  the current bus station as well as a retail kiosk.

To ensure the new bus station is fully accessible, it will have three level entrance and exit points, anti-slip flooring and seating including a wheelchair space at the front of each passenger waiting areas.

As well as improvements to the Bus Station, work will also begin on a new 124 space car park, which will include Electric Vehicle charging bays, motorcycle parking, disabled bays and a wheelchair accessible vehicle space. The parking bays will be longer and wider than the current parking standards to provide users with easier access getting in and out of their vehicles whilst parked.

Public space improvements will also be carried out which will include high quality paving, street lighting and landscaping. Cycle stands will also be provided as part of the design.
