The existing public realm space in North Newgate Street is very unattractive and tired.
An initial consultation around the Bishop Auckland masterplan in 2017, showed that there was great support for improvements to be made to the public realm at North Newgate Street and a need for open space unlike the current offer on North Newgate Street.
Following on from the consultation, plans have been created to provide a flexible space to attract further regeneration and increase footfall to the town centre. The design will include better shared road space, the upgrading of shop fronts in terms of appearance and better shared space facilities including seating and benches. Designs will also include road surface options so all road users accessing shop fronts and the wider town including those who require Vehicular access for loading/unloading.
The proposals will create a year-round economy for the town’s businesses and will help to improve the quality and experience for the users of the town and the projected visitors.
Public consultation on the designs will take place in Autumn 2023.
